Canopy characteristics and behavior of Nellore heifers in Brachiaria brizantha pastures under different grazing heights at a continuous stocking rate R. Bras. Zootec.
Casagrande,Daniel Rume; Azenha,Mariana Vieira; Valente,André Luis da Silva; Vieira,Bruno Ramalho; Moretti,Matheus Henrique; Ruggieri,Ana Cláudia; Berchielli,Telma Teresinha; Reis,Ricardo Andrade.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu canopy structure maintained at different grazing heights under a continuous stocking rate and with a dietary supplementation strategy for the animals during the rainy season. This study also intended to observe the relationships of these variables with the grazing behaviors of the heifers. The effects of three canopy heights (15, 25 and 35 cm) were evaluated in association with three types of supplements: one mineral and two protein/energy supplements, the first with a high rumen degradable protein and energy and the others with a low ratio. Both the protein/energy supplements were provided at 0.3% of body weight/day. The experimental design was completely randomized, with two...

Fixed versus variable rest period effects on herbage accumulation and canopy structure of grazed 'Tifton 85' and 'Jiggs' Bermuda grass PAB
Pedreira,Carlos Guilherme Silveira; Silva,Valdson José da; Guimarães,Murilo Saraiva; Pequeno,Diego Noleto Luz; Tonato,Felipe.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of variable and fixed rest periods on the forage production, plant-part composition, and canopy structural characteristics of 'Tifton 85' and 'Jiggs' Bermuda grass (Cynodon spp.) pastures under rotational stocking. The treatments were two grass cultivars (Jiggs and Tifton 85) and two rest periods (grazing starting whenever the canopy reached 25 cm or every 28 days, regardless of canopy height). A completely randomized experimental design, with a 2×2 factorial arrangement (two grass cultivars and two managements), was used with three replicates. The experiment was carried out during the summer growing season in Piracicaba, SP, Brazil. Pre- and post-grazing forage mass chacteristics were...

Grazing height management does not change the persistence pathway of Andropogon lateralis in a natural pasture PAB
Giustina Junior,Luis Henrique Paim Della; Zanella,Pablo Giliard; Baldissera,Tiago Celso; Pinto,Cassiano Eduardo; Garagorry,Fabio Cervo; Sbrissia,André Fischer.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate tiller dynamics and population stability of Andropogon lateralis in a natural pasture subjected to grazing height management under intermittent stocking method. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with four treatments and four replicates, in 16 experimental units of 875 m2 each. The treatments consisted of four pre-grazing heights of A. lateralis (12, 20, 28, and 36 cm), which was grazed until its initial height was reduced by 40%. Dynamics of tiller birth and death were evaluated using the marked tiller technique over a period of 18 months, from October 2015 to March 2017. The results indicate that the use of different heights for the management of natural pastures does...

IDENTIFICATION OF MAIZE LODGING: A CASE STUDY USING A REMOTELY PILOTED AIRCRAFT SYSTEM REA
Acorsi,Matheus G.; Martello,Maurício; Angnes,Graciele.
ABSTRACT A common agricultural problem in many regions of Brazil is maize lodging, as a consequence of strong winds and rain which impacts on crop growth and yield. However, collecting data using ground-based, manual field measurement methods is inefficient. An emerging tool is the Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS), capable of delivering spatial data with high resolution and flexible periodicity. In this study, the potential to detect the maize lodging using crop surface models derived from RPAS was assessed. Our RPA-based approach uses a quantitative threshold to determine lodging percentage. The threshold values of plant height, used to detect the occurrence of lodging, were based on fixed and variable values. The validation of percentage lodging...

Barbosa,Rodrigo Amorim; Nascimento Júnior,Domicio do; Vilela,Hélio Henrique; Silva,Sila Carneiro da; Euclides,Valéria Pacheco Batista; Sbrissia,André Fischer; Sousa,Braulio Maia de Lana.
It was evaluated the morphogenic and structural characteristics of guinea grass under rotational at three grazing intervals and two defoliation intensities. Grazing intervals corresponded to the time needed by the forage canopy to reach 90, 95 or 100% of incident light interception during regrowth and they were evaluated combined to two defoliation severities (post-grazing conditions, 25 and 50 cm of height), being allocated to experimental units according to a complete randomized design, with three replicates and 3 × 2 factorial arrangement. The experiment was conducted from July 2003 to May 2004. For evaluation of morphogenetic and structural characteristics, ten tillers per experimental unit were selected. Morphogenetic and structural characteristics...

Morphological adaptations of signal grass in response to liming and cutting severities Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Pereira,Lilian Elgalise Techio; Passos,Bruna Scalia de Araújo; Herling,Valdo Rodrigues; Luz,Pedro Henrique de Cerqueira; Avanzi,Junior Cesar.
ABSTRACT Changes in morphological composition and in the plant population were evaluated during late spring, summer and autumn, in swards of Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk in response to liming (C0.0, without liming; C0.7, limestone amount equivalent to 0.7 ton ha-1; and C1.0, limestone amount equivalent to 1.0 ton ha-1), which were subjected to severe or lenient cutting (40 or 60% of the pre-cutting height, respectively). Increased limestone doses did not result in higher herbage mass (HM), leaf area index (LAI) or proportion of leaves (%L) in the pre-harvest. However, lower proportion of dead material was registered in C0.7 treatment. The treatments C0.0 e C0.7 had higher %L during late spring and summer when associated to severe cutting regimes...

Performance and carcass quality of feedlot- or pasture-finished Nellore heifers according to feeding managements in the postweaning phase R. Bras. Zootec.
Casagrande,Daniel Rume; Azenha,Mariana Vieira; Vieira,Bruno Ramalho; Resende,Flávio Dutra de; Faria,Marcelo Henrique de; Berchielli,Telma Teresinha; Ruggieri,Ana Cláudia; Reis,Ricardo Andrade.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the postweaning history of heifers kept on marandu grass pastures with three canopy heights, in a continuous-grazing system, during the rainy period, on feedlot- or pasture finishing. The effects of three canopy heights (15, 25 and 35 cm) associated with two supplements (mineral salt and protein-energy supplement) and two finishing systems in the dry period (feedlot and open pasture) were studied in the postweaning period during the rainy season. The adopted design was completely randomized, with seven replications (animals) in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. The animals which received protein-energy supplement reached the finishing period with greater body weight in relation to those fed mineral salt. In both...

Sward structure and livestock performance in guinea grass cv: Tanzania pastures managed by rotational stocking strategies Scientia Agricola
Euclides,Valéria Pacheco Batista; Montagner,Denise Bataglin; Difante,Gelson dos Santos; Barbosa,Rodrigo Amorim; Fernandes,Wellington Souza.
Grazing strategy is a key element in the determination of sward structure, herbage nutritive value and animal performance. We aimed to compare the herbage characteristics and performance of livestock in pastures of Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania managed, using two rotational stocking strategies, which provided either a fixed-length rest period (FRP) of 35 days in the spring and fall and 30 days in the summer, or a variable-length rest period (VRP), determined by the time required for the canopy to achieve 70 cm in height. The pastures were evaluated in the pregrazing condition for forage mass (FM); leaf (LP), stem (SP) and dead matter (DP) percentages; and nutritive value (NV). The animals were weighed every 28 days. Pastures managed with the FRPs exhibited...
